Save ESOL Campaign

February 12, 2007

From August 2007, the Learning and Skills Council will cease to fund free training in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) for asylum seekers, refugees in employment and migrant workers.

There is a mass lobby of parliament on Wednesday 28th February to save ESOL funding as part of a national campaign organised by the University and College Union. We are campaigning locally against the new restrictions and linking up with the national campaign.

Our fact sheet outlines the key issues raised by the new restrictions and we hope it will help you to support the campaigns by:

  • Writing to your MP to express your concern about the funding changes
  • Writing to your MP to ask them to meet you at the mass lobby of parliament on the 28th February

You can use our template letters to write to your MP if you wish. Please remember to make the necessary changes to the text. You can find out who your local MP is by visiting www.theyworkforyou.com

For further information on the campaign and to find out about travel to the mass lobby on the 28th, please contact Sophie King at forum@mrsn.org.uk / 0161 232 7420.

For further information about the national campaign contact Sharon Russell srussell@ucu.org.uk / 020 7520 3242.

Many thanks for your support.
